My Zunal WebQuests. By María Concepción Pomar Rosselló

Zunal is another web tool that I love to use to create material for my students. It is a platform for designing WebQuests. If you don't know what a WebQuest is, please watch the following video:

If you are wondering whether young children can understand and carry out WebQuests, please watch the following video as well, in which primary school kids explain very clearly what a WebQuest consists on:

I have created five Zunal WebQuests so far. They present activities meant for older children in Early Childhood Education/younger children in Primary Education, with some experience in managing themselves in English. I am going to post each one of them with a brief description:

Roll the die and create a story! This WebQuest's purpose is to present a game using only a normal die. The students will roll the die and according to the results they get they have to create a character that then they will draw and define in simple terms, according to their imagination. It's basically a game of creation of your own story. To design this WebQuest, I have used characters and settings already expressed in my Mindomo mind map Semantic Field of Fairy Tales.

Let's play scientists! Find life in a drop of water. This WebQuest presents a CLIL activity related to science, with an enjoyable task for the children which is to cultivate their own microorganisms in a simple and safe manner. A microscope that can be connected to a computer is required for this WebQuest. The students will describe and draw what they have seen on the digital board, as well as learn some basic vocabulary about science, particularly about parts of the microscope and the nature of microorganisms (paramecia, amoeba, etc.) This is my favourite WebQuest of all those that I have created, including the videos I have recorded myself of microorganisms I have recorded with my microscope. This WebQuest can be used in combination with my Prezi presentation Welcome to the world of microorganisms!

Cooking Green Eggs and Ham! This WebQuest presents activities for parents and children that involve cooking an easy and tasty recipe, related to the poem Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss. The main purpose, apart from learning some practical vocabulary about food and cooking - always related to the poem - is that children try green food at home. An omelette including vegetables will be easy to cook (with the help of parents) and it will be some quality family time. This WebQuest includes a video that I created specifically to explain the recipe step by step and that you can find also here.

In the garden. This is again a WebQuest based on the Mindomo of the semantic field of fairy tales. The idea is to develop one of the topics studied in this Mindomo, in this case a particular setting, gardens - we all know that many magical events take place in beautiful gardens in fairy stories. The WebQuest includes nice pictures and videos of gardens and a video presenting vocabulary related to gardens aimed at kids. The task required is simply to draw a nice garden, with many colours, and sing the songs included in the video with the vocabulary related to gardens.

Dragons!! This is the first Zunal WebQuest that I created, before the platform upgraded with more options. Again, the idea is to take an element from the Mindomo mind map of the semantic field of fairy tales and develop it, presenting it to the students in such a way that the contents are interesting, fun, and easy to understand. The element I chose from the mind map as an example is, as the title implies, dragons. It includes many pictures and videos related to the topic. The task is again drawing and colouring in a dragon, naming it and describing some simple features.

As you will have already noticed, all these WebQuests are written in English but providing the Spanish translation. This is meant for parents and families who don't know much English to understand what the activities are about. Zunal WebQuests are great for carrying out flipped learning methodology activities, involving homework carried out all together and spending quality time related to English learning at home.

I hope you enjoyed exploring this material. Thank you and kindest regards.
